Agree so much with the caveat of how much is real ego and how much is false or unwanted or confused or ignorant ego?
If you can at all consider yourself an individual, some sort of conscious singularity, YOU HAVE AN EGO. One can feel in unison with the species, and their place within it as a certain kind of equivalent but asymmetrically so, but as there will always be differences of opinion in this understanding of reality (dream state or not) we need to “vote” or “clash” or “discuss” or “argue” — and the part of you that decides to go with you at the end of the day IS an ego.
That’s why when gurus talk about completely losing your ego it makes me want to scream. It’s convenient that THOSE gurus — who lead more than they follow — want their followers to rid themselves of the ego entirely.
See? Intent along these lines is far more good intentioned than bad, but agreeing to continually ask these questions is what keeps me out of Chapel Perilous, anyway.
